China is the historic home of the powdered tea tradition from which modern Matcha developed.
During the Tang Dynasty, tea was prepared in forms that were later ground and mixed with water, and by the Song Dynasty powdered tea was being whisked with hot water in a way that closely resembles Matcha today.
In the late 12th century, the Zen monk Eisai brought tea seeds and the powdered tea preparation method from Song dynasty China to Japan, where the practice continued to evolve. Over time, Matcha became closely linked with Japanese tea culture and chanoyu, the tea ceremony tradition shaped by Zen thought and later refined by tea masters including Sen no Rikyu.
